GCSU Procedures: PROCEDURES FOR SEEKING APPROVAL OF NEW CERTIFICATES
Exploratory Discussions
In the early planning stages the dean and appropriate program administrator shall meet with the Provost and discuss the area under consideration. At this meeting certain fundamental criteria will be examined:
(a) Is the certificate congruent with the purposes of the institution?
(b) Is there now and will there continue to be a critical need for the certificate?
Following this meeting, if it is determined that the certificate under discussion warrants further consideration, the Program Administrator will be authorized to proceed with the development of a certificate proposal.
Proposal
Once the dean and program administrator have received approval to go ahead, they will then proceed to develop the final proposal. The proposal shall be completed using the certificate proposal form required by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.
The proposal review process shall include the following steps:
College Review Process
(a) The department faculty recommends new certificate to the program administrator.
(b) The administrator of the program proposing the new certificate sends the proposal to the College Dean.
(c) The College Dean sends the proposal to the appropriate curriculum and instruction committee within the college.
(d) The appropriate college curriculum and instruction committee makes a recommendation to the college dean.
(e) The college dean forwards an electronic copy of the proposal with his/her recommendation (and other necessary documentation as indicated by BOR requirements) to the chair of the Curriculum, Assessment, and Policy Committee, with a copy to the Provost and the chair of the Executive Committee of the University Senate. Proposals including new courses should indicate that the steps necessary for the approval of those courses are underway. The letter of recommendation from the college dean should indicate the status of any new courses that are included with the proposal.
(f) If the certificate is approved, CAPC will send the proposal on to the University Senate for review, who then forwards it to the President for approval. The President will notify the Vice President of Academic Affairs of the action, and if approved, the VPAA will forward the proposal to the BOR for staff review.
