School Tours
The Old
Governor's Mansion offers an opportunity for students to learn history
through educational tours. Students gain a better understanding of
Georgia history by comparing and contrasting present day experiences
with those of the past.
Elementary school students will:
Determine the ways people's lives
have changed over time.
Explain how and why these changes occurred.
Identify famous Georgians and cite
accomplishments.
Identify contributions made by
various ethnic groups to the development of Georgia.
Trace the westward expansion of
Georgia after the American Revolution.
In addition to the above,
middle
school students will also:
Examine and analyze political,
economic, social, demographic, and cultural characteristics of
antebellum Georgia and compare with other areas of the United
States.
Analyze Georgia's role in the Civil
War from secession through Reconstruction, and examine the war's
impact on the state.
In order
to prepare your students for their tour and to review the information
afterwards, a teacher's study guide, pre-tour and post-tour activities
are now available at our
educational
web site. We strongly urge you to reinforce the students' learning
experience with these activities.
How to Schedule a Tour (GROUP TOURS
ARE BY RESERVATION ONLY!)
Call the
Old Governor's Mansion at (478) 445-4545 Monday through Saturday
between 10 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. All tours are offered on a first come
first serve basis. To assure you and your students a rewarding,
educational experience, tour groups cannot exceed 40 students. The
Mansion is, after all, a house, and we want your students to be able to
see and hear at all times. Each group of 20 or more will be divided in
half after the orientation session.
Be prepared to give the following
information when you call:
Name, address, and phone number of
your school.
Name of contact person.
Grade level of touring students.
Number of students and adults.
First and second choices of dates
and times of tour.
Any special needs that you may have.
How we can augment your classroom
work.
Tours
last approximately 50 minutes, so plan on a one-hour visit. Park
school buses in the designated area on South Clarke Street in front of
the Mansion. Click
