RESOURCE GUIDE #5

What Have You Seen? The following features are examples of life in the Old Governor's Mansion without electricity. Raise your hand as you observe each feature.

1. Kitchen: The kitchen has been modernized with electrical appliances. The original kitchen used a hearth with open fire to render coals which were used with various cooking utensils to prepare food. These coals were also used to heat the beehive oven for baking. Can you remember any of the cooking utensils you see in the picture?
2. Skylight or Cupola: You see this feature of the top of the rotunda. During the summertime the windows were raised so that cooler air could circulate throughout the house. What do we have to keep our houses cool today?
3. Candelabra: Candles or oil lamps were the only source of light during the evening hours at The Old Governor's Mansion. You will see many candelabrum as you tour each room.
QUESTION:
Have you ever been without electricity? If so, how did the absence affect you? If you have not been without electricity, how do you think you would be affected?
