Q: When was Central State Hospital (CSH) established?

A: The Georgia legislature authorized the construction of an asylum in 1837. The first patients were admitted in late 1842.

Q: Has the name of the hospital always been Central State Hospital?

A: No, the original name of the hospital was the Georgia Lunatic Asylum. In 1897, the name was changed to the Georgia State Sanitarium. In 1929, the name was changed to Milledgeville State Hospital. Finally in 1967, the name of the hospital changed once again to its present name, Central State Hospital.

Q: How big is Central State Hospital?

A: At one time, CSH was the largest mental institution in the world. CSH occupies approximately 1750 acres. In the 1960s, the hospital population rose to over 13,000.
