Hardy Architectural Class Papers

Processed by Tammy Wyatt

Abstract

Written by Georgia College students, the Hardy Architectural Class Papers consist of one and three quarter cubic feet of research papers covering topics ranging from furniture, moldings, and window treatments, to historic structures and gardens in Georgia, South Carolina, and England. Some of the papers include black & white and color photographs, diagrams, sketches, and blueprints. The collection spans from 1974 to 1993. Also contained in the collection are files from Dr. Jan Hardy's office relating to the class.

Note on Arrangement

The papers arrived in the University Archives in a box, somewhat disorganized. About half of the papers were arranged chronologically by the date submitted to the professor. The other papers were jumbled in the bottom of the box. In keeping with the organized portion of the collection, the papers were arranged chronologically. Those papers without dates were placed at the end of the collection, arranged alphabetically by paper title.

Dr. Hardy's office files were separated into a different series called Hardy Papers and are arranged alphabetically.

Many of the photos, diagrams, sketches, and blueprints contained in the papers were glued or taped to individual pages, and could not be removed without damaging the paper. Leaflet pages were inserted to protect the surrounding pages from further damage. When possible, these items were removed and filed separately; relocation pages were inserted to note removal and new location of each item.

Scope & Content

The majority of the papers provide information on architecture in Milledgeville and several rural areas of Georgia. A couple of papers address broader comparisons of architecture. More information on Milledgeville historic structures and furnishings can be found in books and vertical files housed in Special Collections.

Dr. Janice A. Hardy was Associate Professor of Art at Georgia College from 1965 until her retirement in 1995. She received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from Louisiana State University. The Architectural Workshop during the summer was only one of several classes that she taught during her tenure. Sometimes the class involved a trip to Savannah or some other location to study area architecture first hand.
