Reference Sources
The Reference Collection, located on the second floor of the GCSU Library, is often the best place to start your research.  Books in the Reference Collection can help you become more familiar with your topic and assist you with identifying keywords and important people.  Bibliographies can help you identify specific articles and books.
    Cambridge History of American Theatre (Ref PN 2221 .C37 1998): an authoritative history which covers every aspect of American theatre, from theatre construction to performing.

    Cinema Year by Year 1894 - 2001 (Ref PN 1993.5 .A1 C56 2001): a chronologically arranged, profusely illustrated history of motion pictures.

    Dictionary of the Performing Arts (Ref PN 1579 .M66 1999): a dictionary of terms relating to music, theatre, television, acting, dance, lighting, stagecraft, etc.

    Drama Criticism (Ref PN 1601 .D59): collects and organizes criticism on the works of notable dramatists. Entries also include biographical information about each dramatist and a list of his/her principal works.

    The Film Encyclopedia (Ref PN 1993.45 .K24 2001): an alphabetically arranged encyclopedia containing biographical articles about actors, directors, writers, cinematographers, etc. A filmograhy for each person is included.

    Magill's Survey of Cinema (Ref PN 1993.45 .M3): an alphabetically arranged series covering 515 notable motion pictures, each entry provides the credits for the movie, as well as a detailed synopsis and critical commentary.

    McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of World Drama (Ref PN 1625 .M3): contains articles dealing with individual playwrights and articles dealing with theatre by geographical region.

    The Oxford Dictionary of Plays (Ref PN 1625 .P38 2005): an alphabetically arranged dictionary of "the 1000 most significant plays in world theatre." Entries provide the title, author, date of writing, date and place of first performance, and a brief synopsis.

    The Oxford Encyclopedia of Theatre & Performance (Ref PN 2035 .O94 2003): covers all aspects of theatre and performance both throughout the world and throughout history.

Using the correct subject headings for your topic will help you get more relevant results when searching the Library Catalog.  Below is a concise list of subject headings for the field of drama/theatre.  For a more complete list, you can perform a Subject Heading search using the Exact Search feature in the Library Catalog.

Articles
    Databases
    Most databases index articles from journals, newspapers, and magazines.  Some databases offer full text articles, while others contain only citations.  Some databases are subject specific, while others are more general in coverage.  Some databases relevant to the field of theatre are:

      Academic Search Complete is a multidisciplinary database that contains articles from academic journals and magazines in the humanities, the social sciences, and the general sciences.

      International Bibliography of Theater & Dance with Full Text contains articles, essays and book chapters from publications in drama, dance, media, mime, mixed entertainment, storytelling, music-drama, and puppetry.

      Project Muse (provided by GCSU) is a full-text database of scholarly journals in the arts and sciences.  If you are accessing Project muse from off campus, login to your PAWS account to get the password.

      Research Library is a multidisciplinary database that contains articles from academic journals and magazines in the humanities, the social sciences, and the general sciences.



    Journal Locator
    Search for specific journals or magazines.  The Journal Locator will tell you the location and availability of a journal or magazine: either in the GCSU Periodicals Collection or in a database.
