Reference Sources
The Reference Collection, located on the second floor of the GCSU Library, is often the best place to start your research.  Books in the Reference Collection can help you become more familiar with your topic and assist you with identifying keywords and important people.  Bibliographies can help you identify specific articles and books.
    The Official Museum Directory (Ref AM 10 .A2 04 2000): covers aquariums, arboretums, art museums, children's museums, general museums, historic sites, history museums, natural history museums, nature centers, planetariums, science museums, specialized museums, zoos, as well as museum products and services.


Subject Headings
Using the correct subject headings for your topic will help you get more relevant results when searching the Library Catalog.  Below is a concise list of subject headings for the field of Museum Studies.  For a more complete list, you can perform a Subject Heading search using the Exact Search feature in the Library Catalog.

Articles
    Databases
    Most databases index articles from journals, newspapers, and magazines.  Some databases offer full text articles, while others contain only citations.  Some databases are subject specific, while others are more general in coverage.  Some databases relevant to the field of Museum Studies are:
      Academic Search Complete is a multidisciplinary database that contains articles from academic journals and magazines in the humanities, the social sciences, and the general sciences.

      Grove Art Online contains the full text of The Dictionary of Art and The Oxford Companion to Western Art, as well as several extensive collections of images.

      Research Library is a multidisciplinary database that contains articles from academic journals and magazines in the humanities, the social sciences, and the general sciences.



    Journal Locator
    Search for specific journals or magazines.  The Journal Locator will tell you the location and availability of a journal or magazine: either in the GCSU Periodicals Collection or in a database.

      Museum and Society: an interdisciplinary journal hosted by the University of Leicester covering all issues associated with museums and other places of public culture concerned with collecting, exhibiting and display.

      ArtsJournal: "Each day ArtsJournal features link to stories culled from more than 200 English-language newspapers, magazines and publications featuring writing about arts and culture."

      International
      Arts Management Network: "an international information network for arts managers. It adresses primarily to professionals in the arts and creative sector. It is also a resource for academics, students, policy makers, researchers, regional and national authorities, business people, and journalists.

      International Council of Museums: "the international organization of museums and museum professionals which is committed to the conservation, continuation and communication to society of the world's natural and cultural heritage."


      National
      American Association of Museums: "the only organization representing the entire scope of museums and professionals and nonpaid staff who work for and with museums." You can also search for job opportunities.

      American Association for State and Local History: "provides leadership and support for its members who preserve and interpret state and local history in order to make the past more meaningful to all Americans."

      American Federation for the Arts: "initiates and organizes art exhibitions and provides educational and professional programs in collaboration with the museum community."

      Americans for the Arts: "the nation's leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts in America . . . dedicated to representing and serving local communities and creating opportunities for every American to participate in and appreciate all forms of the arts."

      ArtCareer.net: "provides a wide range of comprehensive career opportunities, listings and valuable information" in the visual arts.

      College Art Association: "supports all practitioners and interpreters of visual art and culture, including artists and scholars, who join together to cultivate the ongoing understanding of art as a fundamental form of human expression."

      Museum Employment resource Center: "lists jobs and other information related to the museum, heritage management, and cultural resource communities."

      National Trust for Historic Preservation "provides leadership, education, advocacy, and resources to save America's diverse historic places and revitalize our communities."

      Smithsonian Museum Studies Page: "The Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies (SCEMS) assists the museum community in acquiring and strengthening its understandings and practices of museology. This website is one of the Center's tools for serving the educational and informational needs of the field."

      Society of Architectural Historians: "founded in 1940 to advance knowledge and understanding of the history of architecture, design, landscape, and urbanism worldwide. The Society serves scholars, professionals in allied fields (including architecture, historic preservation and planning), and the interested general public."


      State
      Georgia Association of Historians: "Membership includes include junior college, college, and university professors, high school teachers, archivists, librarians, journalists, graduate students, and others whose profession or scholarship involves any area of historical study."  The purpose of the organization is "to strengthen the historical profession and to enhance the professional lives of historians in Georgia."

      Georgia Association of Museums and Galleries: "a statewide organization dedicated to serving a diverse membership in a way that establishes a responsive network, provides a resource base and promotes professionalism so that Georgia's museum community is strong, effective and proactive."
