Reference Sources
The Reference Collection, located on the second floor of the GCSU Library, is often the best place to start your research.  Books in the Reference Collection can help you become more familiar with your topic and assist you with identifying keywords and important people.  Bibliographies can help you identify specific articles and books. You can find other resources in the GCSU Library's Reference Collection, and in the Circulating Collection, by searching the Library Catalog.
    The Dictionary of Art (Ref N31 .D5 1996): a comprehensive reference work, covering both the fine and decorative arts.  This title is available in the GCSU Library Reference Collection and online via GALILEO.   Grove Art Online contains the full text of The Dictionary of Art and The Oxford Companion to Western Art, as well as several extensive collections of images.

    A Dictionary of Twentieth-Century Art (Ref N 6490 .C5317 1998): covers the more traditional fields such as painting, sculpture, and the graphic arts, as well as more recent fields such as performance, conceptual, and video art of the twentieth century.

    Encyclopedia of World Art (Ref N 31 E4833): covers all aspects of the visual arts in all countries and periods.

    Modern Arts Criticism (Ref N 40 .M63): presents commentary, criticism, and biographical information on notable artists of the modern era.

    North American Women Artists of the Twentieth Century (Ref N 6503 .N67 1995): a biographical dictionary of women artists in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

    The Oxford Companion to Twentieth-Century Art (Ref N 6490 .094): contains articles dealing with individual artists, artistic movements, terminology, and artistic developments in various geographic regions.

    The Oxford Dictionary of Art (Ref N 6538 .N5 H45 1993): contains brief entries dealings with painting, sculpture, and graphic art from antiquity to the present.

    The Prestel Dictionary of Art and Artists in the 20th Century (Ref N 33 .P74 2000): covers the lives and works of notable artists of the twentieth century.

    St. James Guide to Hispanic Artists (Ref  N 6538 .H58 S7 2002): covers the lives and works of Latin American artists from Mexico, Central America, South America, and the United States.

    The World Encyclopedia of Cartoons (Ref NC 1325 .W67 1999): deals with all aspects of cartooning. The encyclopedia covers both notable cartoonists and notable works (printed and animated cartoons).



Subject Headings
Using the correct subject headings for your topic will help you get more relevant results when searching the Library Catalog.  Below is a concise list of subject headings for the field of Art.  For a more complete list, you can perform a Subject Heading search using the Exact Search feature in the Library Catalog.

Articles
    Databases
    Most databases index articles from journals, newspapers, and magazines.  Some databases offer full text articles, while others contain only citations.  Some databases are subject specific, while others are more general in coverage.  Some databases relevant to the field of Art are:
      Academic Search Complete is a multidisciplinary database that contains articles from academic journals and magazines in the humanities, the social sciences, and the general sciences.

      Grove Art Online contains the full text of The Dictionary of Art and The Oxford Companion to Western Art, as well as several extensive collections of images.

      Project Muse (provided by GCSU) is a full-text database of scholarly journals in the arts and sciences.  If you are accessing Project muse from off campus, login to your PAWS account to get the password.

      Research Library is a multidisciplinary database that contains articles from academic journals and magazines in the humanities, the social sciences, and the general sciences.

    Journal Locator
    Search for specific journals or magazines.  The Journal Locator will tell you the location and availability of a journal or magazine: either in the GCSU Periodicals Collection or in a database.


    Online Journals

    Some scholarly journals are freely accessible via the Internet. Below is a selective list of electronic journal that pertain to Art.
      Asian Arts: "The online journal for the study and exhibition of the arts of Asia"

      Crossings: an "electronic journal of art and technology," published by the University of Dublin

      ImageText: a scholarly journal devoted to " the academic study of comic books, comic strips, and animated cartoons"

      International Journal of Education & the Arts: an electronic journal containing research articles dealing with "the various fields of aesthetics and art education."

      Nineteenth-Century Art Worldwide: "a journal of nineteenth-century visual culture"
