About the Library
History and Mission Ina Dillard Russell Library was constructed in 1932 and renovated in 1968. The original building was named for the mother of the late Senator Richard B. Russell. For more history and pictures, see the Library History web page. The current library has been renovated and expanded to form the GCSU Library and Instructional Technology Center. This $19.5 million project adds 93,000 square feet to the 44,000 square-foot library. The new library addition opened for Fall of 2004. The complete renovation of the existing library building opened in Fall 2005. The new library is one of the largest libraries in Georgia. The three-story building houses over 180,000 books and the library subscribes to over 14,000 print and electronic periodicals. The Library also possesses several special collections, including the Flannery O'Connor Collection, the GCSU Horology Collection, and Senator Paul Coverdell's Papers. The library is a selective depository of United States Government Documents. Library MissionThe GCSU Library actively supports and promotes the mission of Georgia College & State University, Georgia's designated public liberal arts university, by identifying, collecting, and providing access to and instruction in the use of information resources and services. Library faculty and staff seek to create an educational and cultural environment that fosters academic excellence, a passion for achievement, and the critical thinking skills necessary for lifelong learning. |
