Music Therapy Clinic
The Clinic is a
state-of-the art clinic designed for the training of music therapists at Georgia College & State University. It comprises an observation room with a
two-way mirror, a full-equipped clinic, and classroom facilities. The purpose of the clinic is three-fold: to allow students in the early stages of their academic studies the opportunity to observe professional music therapists in action; to allow more advanced students the opportunity to put their skills into practice under close supervision; and to increase community access to music therapy services. The
clinic is equipped with a full complement of such traditional instruments as pianos, guitars, autoharps, Orff instruments, electronic keyboards, and omnichords. In addition, the clinic contains such technologically-sophisticated equipment as a Somatron and a multisensory sound lab, stereo system
and recording studio. The Somatron is a vibrotactile chairs which is used
in music therapy for stress management. The multisensory sound lab is used
to provide people with a variety of special needs. Keeping in mind our mission
of increasing community access to music therapy services, careful consideration
was given in designing the clinic to make it wheelchair accessible.
The Improv Room is a large
multi-purpose room designed for groups and movement activities. The room is
ideal for exploratory sessions. Instruments are accessible and within reach of
children and persons in wheelchairs.A variety of drums, Orff instruments,
electronic, and traditional instruments encourage participants to explore their
creativity in a safe non-threatening environment.
The Piano and Technology Room
houses electronic keyboards equipped with computers. Each station has Music Time
and Finale software for easy manipulation of original and composed music. The
Recording Studio provides students, faculty, and consumers the opportunity to
record live music. The recording Studio offers 8 track recording and CD dubbing
for professional quality recordings.
Careers in Music Therapy
A career in music therapy makes it possible to combine a love of music with a
genuine interest in working with people. With a clear respect for human dignity,
the music therapist structures musical experiences to assist people in discovering
their full potential and in achieving desired behavioral changes. Music therapists
have the rare opportunity to work with a variety of different people of differing
ages--from infants to older adults, from people who are developmentally delayed,
mentally ill, or physically disabled to those who are learning disabled, emotionally
disturbed, or chemically dependent. More innovative programs have been started for
people with life-threatening illnesses, for battered women and abused children, as
well as in birthing centers.
Music therapists may work in private practice or on
staff at hospitals, hospices, or schools. While salaries vary according to location,
employment opportunities are increasing nationwide, particularly in preventative,
innovative, and gerontological services. Music therapy was identified in 100 Best
Careers for the Year 2000 as a promising career choice.
