Bachelor of Music Therapy Program (BMT)
The focus of the baccalaureate program is threefold: music, health & behavioral sciences, and music therapy. Supervised clinical experiences are an integral part of the curriculum and a 6-month off-campus internship follows completion of the coursework. The music therapy programs at Georgia College & State University have been approved by both the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) - fomerly the National Association for Music Therapy. A graduate of Georgia College & State University with a bachelor's degree in music therapy meets the AMTA requirements for registration and is eligible to take the national exam of the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT).

Degree Equivalency Program

The Degree Equivalency Program is offered for those already possessing a music degree from a recognized college or university. This nondegree program of guided study is individualized, building on previous studies and experiences to meet the AMTA requirements for registration and the CBMT requirements to take the national exam of the CBMT.

Minors

Minor in Movement Arts Therapy
The minor is 18 credit hours and consists of an Introduction to Creative Arts Therapy that covers many aspects of Creative Arts Therapies, in-depth study of dance therapy, movement, and a variety of dance techniques. The core Movement Arts Therapy courses will be taught during the summer beginning 2008. This minor can be used as a complement to majors such as Music Therapy, Music Education, Psychology, Education, Special Education, and anyone interested in movement used as a therapeutic intervention.

  • MOVT 2100: Intro to Creative Arts Therapy (3 hours) F
  • MOVT 2200: Survey of Dance Movement Therapy  (3 hours) SU
  • MOVT 3000: Movement and Dance for Therapists (3 hours) SU
  • MUST 4700: Special Topics in Music Therapy (3 hours)
  • HEAT 3100: Structural Kinesiology (3 hours)

Minor in Music Therapy
The minor in Music Therapy provides the music therapy theoretical education necessary to be a good consumer of music therapy techniques and resources and to have a basic understanding of the function of music therapy. This degree will function as an adjunct to another major field of study.
